Preliminary Study on the In vitro and In vivo Effects of Asparagopsis taxiformis Bioactive Phycoderivates on Teleosts

Several compounds from marine organisms have been studied for their potential use in aquaculture. Among the red algae, Asparagopsis taxiformis is considered one of the most promising species for the production of bioactive metabolites with numerous proposed applications. Here, the in vitro antibacterial activity, the easy handling and the absence of adverse effects on marine fish species are reported. Depending on the seasonal period of sampling, ethanol extracts of A. taxiformis exhibited significantly different inhibitory activity against fish pathogenic bacteria. The mechanisms for discriminating the ’’self’’ from ’’non-self” have evolved into a long history of cellular and molecular strategies, from damage repair to the co-evolution of host-pathogen interactions. Vibrio Species in Seawater and Mussels: Abundance and Numerical Taxonomy

Summary Qualitative and quantitative studies were performed on Vibrio species from seawater and mussel samples at a hatchery in Valencia harbour, and from market mussels. Vibrio alginolyticus and V. harveyi were the most abundant species in all samples. Other species identified were V. pelagius, V. mediterranei, V. tubiashii, V. damsella, V. splendidus, V. fluvialis, V. parahaemolyticus, V. anguillarum, V. cholerae and Aeromonas spp . The abundance of V. harveyi and V. mediterranei was positively correlated with temperature whereas V. pelagius counts showed negative correlation with this parameter. Numerical Taxonomy of Vibrionaceae Isolated from Cultured Amberjack ( Seriola dumerili ) and Surrounding Water

A numerical taxonomic study was performed on 148 isolates of Gram-negative, heterotrophic, facultative anaerobic bacteria isolated from amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and its surrounding culture water. The study included 30 type and reference strains belonging to genera Vibrio, Listonella, and Photobacterium. The strains were characterized by 109 morphological, biochemical, physiological, and nutritional tests. Cluster analysis of similarity matrices obtained with S(SM) and S(J) coefficients was carried out. Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) bacterial infection and confinement stress acts on F-type lectin (DlFBL) serum modulation

The F-lectin, a fucose-binding protein found from invertebrates to ectothermic vertebrates, is the last lectin family to be discovered. Here, we describe effects of two different types of stressors, bacterial infection and confinement stress, on the modulation of European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) F-lectin (DlFBL), a well-characterized serum opsonin, using a specific antibody. The infection of the Vibrio alginolyticus bacterial strain increased the total haemagglutinating activity during the 16-day testing period.
